1. Introduction

Welcome to Husky Patrol. Operated by the Saint Mary's University Students' Association (SMUSA), this application provides a safe ride tracking service for students of Saint Mary's University (SMU) in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We are committed to protecting your personal information in compliance with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and applicable provincial laws.

2. Data We Collect

When you request a ride at the SMUSA Info Desk, we collect the following information:

  • Name and SMU A-Number: To verify your identity as an active student.
  • Pronouns (optional): So staff and drivers address you correctly.
  • Destination Address: To coordinate drop-offs and provide route tracking.
  • Phone Number (Pick-ups only): To allow the driver to contact you upon arrival.

For Drivers, we collect Precise Background Location Data (GPS) during active shifts to provide live ETAs to waiting students.

3. How We Use Your Data

Your data is used strictly for operational purposes by SMUSA: to manage the waitlist, map out efficient routes, and ensure the safety of students and drivers. We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third-party advertisers or the university administration outside of necessary safety and security protocols.

4. Data Retention and Deletion

Your personal information is kept only as long as necessary. Waitlist data is removed from the active queue immediately upon boarding. Master history logs containing addresses and names are routinely aggregated for funding analytics and then permanently purged from our active databases. You may request the deletion of your data at any time - see section 5 below.

5. How to Request Deletion of Your Data (Husky Patrol App)

You can ask SMUSA to delete the personal information the Husky Patrol app and service hold about you. To make a request:

  1. Email info@smusa.ca with the subject line "Husky Patrol Data Deletion Request".
  2. Include your full name and either your SMU A-Number (students) or the email address you use to log in (staff).
  3. We will confirm your request and complete it within 30 days.

What we delete: your ride records (name, A-Number, pronouns, phone number and address), any feedback you sent through the app, and, for staff, your login account and staff record.

What we keep: anonymized ride records that no longer identify you (street name, ride type and time only), which we use for service statistics. Ride records older than 30 days are already anonymized this way. Driver shift times may be kept as required for payroll records.

6. Security

We use industry-standard encryption and secure authentication through Google Firebase to protect your data against unauthorized access, alteration, or destruction.
